API 610 CP PUMP: TYPES AND ROLES

API 610 is the API standard for CP and CP pumping systems. It provides design criteria for the actual CP pump design, how the CP pump should be tested, and what type of base it should be mounted on.

The API 610 CP Pump Standard includes various configuration codes for different CP pump types. These are called by two letters, followed by a single number. First, the letters are used to define the other main types of pumps, where OH is Overhung, BB is Between-bearings, and VS is Vertically Suspended. Then, each section uses the number to differentiate more detailed configuration options.

Below are simple definitions for some API pump types. Each of the following pump types is API 610 pump Standard subcategory.

API OH1 CP

The API OH1 is a horizontal, foot-mounted, single-stage, end-suck overflow pump. The pump is mounted on a base plate with a flexible coupler.

API OH2 CP

The API OH2 is a horizontal, centerline-mounted, single-stage, end-suck overflow pump and single-bearing housing. The single-bearing housing helps absorb the forces on the pump shaft and maintain the rotor’s position during pump operation.

API OH3 CP

The API OH3 is a single-stage, vertical inline pump with separate bearing brackets. The bearing housing with the pump is integral to help absorb the pump loads, and the motor is usually mounted on a support that is also integrated with the pump. The Pump and engine have flexible shaft coupling.

API OH4 CP

The API OH4 pump is a single-stage, vertical inline pump with a rigid coupling on the pump and motor shafts. The motor’s C-face mounts directly to the pump housing.

API OH5 CP

The API OH5 pump is a vertical, single-stage overflow pump closely linked to the motor. In a close-coupled design, the pump impeller is mounted directly to the motor shaft, and the motor’s C-face is mounted directly to the pump housing.

API OH6 CP

API OH6 is a single-stage, horizontal or vertical high-speed overhang pump with an integral gearbox attached to the pump box. A flexible coupling motor drives the gearbox, and the impeller is mounted directly to the gearbox’s high-speed shaft.

API BB1 CP

BB1 is a one- or two-stage pump with rotating assembly bearings on both ends. The pump is mounted on a baseplate and driven by a motor through flexible coupling.

API BB2 CP

BB2 is a one- or two-stage pump with rotating assembly bearings on both ends. The pump is mounted on a baseplate and driven by a motor through flexible coupling.

API BB3 CP

BB3 is a multi-stage pump with rotating assembly bearings on both ends. The pump is mounted on a base plate and driven by an engine via a flexible coupling.

API BB4 CP

BB4 is a multi-stage pump with rotating assembly bearings on both ends. The BB4 pump is sometimes referred to as a tie-rod pump, segmental-ring pump, or ring-section pump, as its primary housing consists of separate, sectional pieces all held together by large, threaded rods.

API BB5 CP

The BB5 is a multi-stage pump with bearings on both ends of the rotating assembly. The pump is mounted on a baseplate and driven by a motor through flexible coupling. This pump is commonly called a “barrel pumps” because the outer housing looks like a barrel.

API VS1 CP

VS1 is a single-casing, vertically suspended, wet pit diffuser pump. Pump discharge is routed through the upright column suspending bowl assemblies.

API VS2 CP

The VS2 is a vertically suspended, wet, single-casing volute pump. Pump discharge is routed through the upright column balancing bowl assemblies.

API VS3 CP

The VS3 is a vertically suspended, wet, single-casing axial-flow pump. Pump discharge is routed through the upright column balancing bowl assemblies.

API VS4 CP

VS4 is a vertically suspended, single-casing volute pump. This pump has a separate column of shaft discharge. Throughout the centre column, one or more bearings support the line shaft.

API VS5 CP

VS5 is a vertically suspended, single-casing volute pump. This pump has a separate discharge column from the shaft column. Only the top housing bearings support the line shaft and have no support bearing inside the column.

API VS6 CP

The VS6 is a double-casing, vertically suspended, wet diffuser pump. Pump discharge is routed through the upright column balancing bowl assemblies. Due to the second case around the outside of the pump, the VS6 is often called a “Can Pump.”

API-VS7 CP

The VS7 is a vertically suspended, wet, double-casing volute pump. Pump discharge is routed through the upright column balancing bowl assemblies. Due to the second case around the outside of the pump, the VS6 is often called a “Can Pump.”
